Resident Evil
Resident Evil:
Yet another video game turned movie that was less than stellar, which we've definitely seen before in movies like Tomb Raider, Double Dragon, and Mario Brothers just to name a few. Actually, the only recent video game turned movie that worked well was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and that was because the movie's story had nothing to do with the video game. Resident Evil might just as well have been titled Night of the Living Dead Part 4 because it was the same old story where a bunch of zombies (the reanimated dead) are looking to eat human flesh. The director decided to fill the movie with cheap suspense moments where the tension is built up with some menacing silence and then suddenly broken with a loud noise. These types of suspense scenes have been done to death and have since become very tired and lame. There were however some promising things which would probably compel me to see the sequel should they ever come out with one. Milla Jovovich does get to kick some butt in the movie (which I wanted to see more of in The Fifth Element) and the ending left room for great sequel possibilities. It's the same sort of thing like Jurassic Park 3 which was a horrible movie, but if Jurassic Park 4 ever came out, I have to admit that I'd probably go see it. Same goes for something like Tomb Raider, I guess for the hopes that the sequel will be much better than the original. Such was the case in The Mummy Returns where the first movie needed help, but the sequel was good. For those that haven't seen Resident Evil yet, it's probably not necessary. But for a rental, it might be fine.
