Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone:

Chris Columbus brings us the long anticipated movie from the popular J.K. Rowling book series.  In this first installment, we have the discovery of Harry Potter and his wizardry potential.  The higher members of the magic world have discovered Harry and choose to bring him into their school known as Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.  There, Harry learns to control his newfound powers and tackles any surprises along the way.  That's pretty much it.  This Harry Potter movie seemed just to act as a setup for the upcoming sequels.  Maybe with an established goal, the sequel(s) will have more of a point other than Harry discovering his magical powers.  Still, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone does manage to create a wonderful world of magic and fantasy.  The visuals effects are stunning... almost up to the caliber of The Fellowship of the Rings.  However, the movie is really geared towards children and therefore the storyline is really a bit tame.  If you have kids, they will enjoy it while you can just sit back and watch the effects.
