Showtime

Showtime:

Here we have a lighthearted action/comedy in the tradition of 48 Hours, Midnight Run, and Rush Hour.  The story is always the same: two guys (usually cops) who are polar opposites are forced to work together from which comical situations arise.  For some reason, I buy into it every time because I love this sort of thing.  Mitch Preston (Robert De Niro) and Trey Sellers (Eddie Murphy) are cops forced to work together for a new reality TV show produced by Chase Renzi (Rene Russo).  The world gets to watch every moment on television as Mitch and Trey try to crack their latest case.  I laughed out loud on more than a few occasions... something few comedies I've seen recently can make me do.  It's good to see Robert De Niro in a comedy again because his last one (Meet the Parents) really didn't do anything for me.  It's strange because De Niro's serious demeanor can be humorous in movies like this, but then in his mob movies, that same demeanor is almost frightening.  Speaks to his versatility I guess.  Eddie Murphy is also back in top form recovering from recent flops like Bowfinger and Dr. Doolittle 2.  He's always done well in his cop roles.  Showtime delivers the laughs and is definitely worth the price of admission.
