Riding In Cars With Boys (2001)
Riding In Cars With Boys:
Riding In Cars With Boys is basically a biography on Beverly D'Onofrio (played by Drew Barrymore). Beverly gets pregnant at the young age of fifteen and quickly finds herself living a life that she never chose. While trying to take care of her child and her deadbeat husband, she also tries to realize her ambitions of becoming a writer. After overcoming numerous setbacks and obstacles, she finally does become the writer that she had always dreamed of. She writes a book detailing the events of her life from which this movie is based. Beverly's story is more or less about family, relationships, motherhood, and having dreams.
James Woods does a fantastic job playing Beverly's father with his witty delivery and Brittany Murphy is spectacular as Fay (Beverly's best friend) bringing some great emotional depth into her role. There are a few funny moments but on the whole, it's really a dramatic movie. The script could have moved along faster as there are parts of the movie that dragged a bit. There's also a part of me that wants to say, "So what?" Lots of people have/had lives like this, so why is Beverly D'Onofrio's made into a movie. I wouldn't normally pick a movie like this to watch, but a lady sitting next to me on a plane ride advised it. She seemed to be somewhat of a movie critic herself so I gave it a chance. In the end... Am I glad I took that lady's advice? I couldn't say either way, but at least I'm no worse off.
