Mr. Deeds (2002)
Mr. Deeds:
In this latest Adam Sandler movie, he plays a small town guy by the name of Longfellow Deeds. Deeds has learned that he's inherited $40 billion from a distant uncle and goes to New York to collect his inheritance. While there, he meets reporter Babe Bennett (Winona Ryder) who in order to get a story on him, pretends to be his girlfriend. Ever so predictable, she falls in love with him in the process and must convince him that she really loves him. There were a total of maybe 3 or 4 moments in the whole movie and most of the funny parts were given away in the trailer (even those weren't that funny). It's obvious that Sandler tried to capture the same feel of Big Daddy (1999) but failed miserably. There were just too many awkward moments in the way they handled the emotional aspects of Sandler and Ryder's characters. It worked in Big Daddy as the audience felt terrible when the kid was taken away from Sandler, but when they try to pull the same off here, the emotion just seems way too forced and out of place. I actually had to turn my head away when Winona Ryder started to cry because it was just so embarrassingly awkward. I think Adam Sandler would be better served tuning up his techniques with some more slapstick type of comedies in the tradition of Happy Gilmore (1996) and The Waterboy (1998). We'll see if Sandler's decline will continue or if he can pull himself out of this tailspin he's in as of late.
