Moulin Rouge!

Moulin Rouge! manages to create a fantastical world set in Paris, France. We get to watch Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor unleash spectacular singing voices as they belt out contemporary songs to tell a story of truth, beauty, freedom, and love (that's straight from the movie's tagline, by the way). Christian (McGregor) is a writer who has moved to Paris to experience the Bohemian revolution of the early 1900's. There he meets Satine (Kidman) at the Moulin Rouge and they fall in love. However, there is a richer, more powerful man who wants Satine for himself and does everything he can to get her. Who will Satine end up with? The story itself is a pretty typical one that's been done many times with different characters. That said, it wasn't so much the story that impressed me, but the way it was told was absolutely phenomenal. It's a visually astonishing movie with so much going on that you might have to watch it more than once to capture it all. Baz Luhrmann's direction is nothing short of groundbreaking as I have never seen anything like it before. Any moviegoer should find Moulin Rouge! to be an amazing movie experience.
