K-PAX (2001)
K-PAX:
Dr. Mark Powell (Jeff Bridges) has a new mental patient named Prot (Kevin Spacey) who believes he's an alien. Powell of course tries to talk some sense into him and discover who this mysterious patient really is. At first, Powell discovers that Prot actually does have some abnormal abilities such as seeing light outside of the human visible spectrum or the ability to plot out unknown star systems. But upon further investigation, it turns out that Prot may simply be repressing a darker past that may have torn him into two personalities. Dr. Powell's mission through the movie is to find out who Prot really is. K-PAX turned out to not be the "touching" story that it was hyped up to be, but instead tediously cheesy. In fact, after the movie is over, you can't help but feel unfulfilled. It seems like an awful waste of a couple hours to get to the simple theme of "live life to the fullest" or "don't take anything for granted." I think the filmmakers wanted to leave the audience burning with the question of whether or not Prot was an alien, but I just didn't care to look for the answer.
