Iron Monkey (1993)
Iron Monkey:
More great martial arts choreography from the acclaimed Woo-ping Yuen who has also brought us great works like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and The Matrix (1999). Before those, he got to sit in the director's chair for Iron Monkey which is a great far-eastern take on the old Robin Hood tale. In Iron Monkey, Dr. Yang (Rongguang Yu) is the local physician who in his spare time takes on his alter ego, the Iron Monkey, in order to help the poor. When the government decides to crack down on his efforts, they send everything they've got after the Iron Monkey who now must save himself as well as other's in his circle. This movie has some of the best fight choreography I've ever seen and an added pinch of humor makes it very entertaining. Asian audiences were able to experience this movie back in 1993 when it was originally released and finally someone (Quentin Tarantino) has brought this movie to American audiences in 2001. A good, tried & true story combined with action and humor makes for a fun movie experience. I hear that there's an Iron Monkey 2 out there somewhere. Now if I could only get my hands on it.
