Ice Age (2002)

Ice Age:

Sid (John Leguizamo) is a trouble-prone sloth, Manfred (Ray Romano) is a reclusive wooly mammoth, Diego (Denis Leary) is a scheming saber-toothed tiger and together they take will us on a fun-filled adventure through the ice age.  The plot has been done over and over but it is very suitable for a children's story. Sid the sloth, is being chased by a couple of dangerous rhinos so he runs to nearby Manfred the mammoth for protection.  After Manfred saves Sid, Sid follows Manfred despite Manfred's objections (very similar to the opening of Shrek).  The two stumble onto a human baby and must figure out how to return it to it's family.  They meet up with a saber-toothed tiger who will lead the way to the other humans.  The saber-toothed tiger, however, has ulterior motives and are planning to lead them into an ambush.  After spending some quality time with them all, will the tiger still go through with the original plan?  Of course not.  It is a children's movie after all but in kid's movies these days, moviemakers have wised up a bit and put in humor for adults as well.  It makes sense since they are the ones who will be taking the kids to go see the movie.  The witty dialogue along with the vocal antics of John Leguizamo and Denis Leary is what really steals the show.  The best parts of the movie are definitely the cracks that are meant to go over the kids' heads.  You'll have to keep an ear out for them because they're slipped in there very subtly.  Even though the story is pretty basic, it's a movie worth seeing for the chemistry of the characters and the subtle adult humor.  I guess I just have a soft spot for these types of children's movies in the same category with others like Monsters, Inc. and Shrek.
