Gosford Park
Gosford Park:
For a movie that was being hyped as a comedy, Gosford Park was pretty disappointing. Maybe I just didn't quite get their dry British wit, but it really wasn't that funny. In addition, the movie's characters all seemed to be poorly developed. We merely get a glimpse into each character's personality which makes it very difficult to care about their various predicaments. I think the filmmakers also tried to squeeze in too many intertwining plotlines to adequately expand on any one of them. There were so many plotlines to set up that the murder-mystery took nearly 1 1/2 hours to develop and by that point, it was really hard to care about the "whodunit" part. When the big mystery is finally solved, there's no big feeling of satisfaction either. Discontent is more like it. The last thing I thought to myself as I left the theater was, "That's the big finale? How dull." If there is anything good that came out of Gosford Park, it's the 1930's social commentary focusing on the dividing line between the privileged and the servants. It's only about 70 years too late to be considered groundbreaking or anything.
