Frailty (2001)

Frailty:

I wasn't expecting too much out of this movie after seeing the trailers but I was pleasantly surprised.  Frailty features Bill Paxton in his feature directorial debut and he manages to pull off a sleeper hit (at least for me it was a hit).  Powers Booth plays an FBI agent in charge of trying to solve a string of serial murders.  One night, Matthew McConaughey waltzes into this FBI agent's office and declares that he knows who the killer is.  So he tells his story in a series of flashbacks that will reveal the truth about this serial killer.  I know that's a very abrupt summary, but I don't want to reveal too much of the story as it might ruin it for some.  This story is seemingly simple until the very end but it managed to keep the audience hanging in suspense for most of the ride.  Even though I saw the "surprise" ending coming about twenty minutes into the movie, it was still somewhat of a surprise with some of the other elements they threw into it.  At first, I had a slight problem with some of the spirituality involved with the ending but after stewing over it for a few hours, I think was actually good that it was included.  It explained a lot of the motive involved but it just took me a few hours to finally get it.  Now that I've finally got it, I can say that it was a movie well worth watching.
