The Count of Monte Cristo
The Count of Monte Cristo:
Imagine being betrayed by your best friend and then having 13 years to stew over it in a prison cell. You'd be pretty upset too wouldn't you? If there's one theme that this movie has to offer us its that maybe revenge isn't such a bad thing after all. Edmond (James Caviezel) and Fernand (Guy Pearce) are best friends until Fernand's betrayal wrongfully lands Edmond in a horrible prison. While imprisoned, Edmond is able to meet fellow prisoner Abbe Faria (Richard Harris) who educates Edmond on literature, culture, and even sword fighting. When Edmond is finally able to escape 13 years later, he is able to find the Treasure of Sparta (left to him by Abbe Faria) and becomes the Count of Monte Cristo in order to get revenge on those who have wronged him. The way the story is told, the audience will be pulling for Edmond to get that very revenge as Guy Pearce makes for an excellent villain. The movie may seem a bit cliché in some spots but overall it's pretty entertaining.
