The Bourne Identity (2002)

The Bourne Identity:

Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is a highly trained assassin who finds himself floating in the middle of the ocean with a case of amnesia.  He must discover his true identity but in the meantime, the very people he used to work for are now trying to kill him.  Sounds a lot like The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) doesn't it?  Similarities aside though, The Bourne Identity doesn't offer much other than some pretty entertaining action scenes.  The main plot points follow Jason Bourne as he tries to find out his identity and the people trying to kill him.  But within the first twenty minutes of the movie, the audience already knows that Bourne is a skilled assassin and that it is Conklin (Chris Cooper) who is trying to kill him.  So now that there are no more surprises, what's left?  There has to be some sort of shocking twist at the end right?  Nope... we just watch the movie play out exactly as we expect.  The fight scenes, car chase, and shoot-outs are all excellent, but there just isn't much of a payoff as far as the story goes.  Matt Damon does do a good job in his first action role, but he may have been too hasty in choosing one.  This was supposedly a new kind "smarter" action movie, but it just doesn't deliver.  These days, a lot of good action sequences just aren't enough to redeem these weak scripts.
