Bandits

Bandits:

I usually love bank robber movies but Bandits is a bit different than the rest.  Usually, the movie revolves around the bank heist(s) and the planning and execution is what actually drives the storyline forward.  In Bandits, the story is definitely more character driven and bank robbing is left as more of a side-note that serves as a medium for telling another story.  We start by watching Joe Blake (Bruce Willis) and Terry Collins (Billy Bob Thornton) as they go about their bank-robbing business.  During a getaway, they run into lonely housewife Kate Wheeler (Cate Blanchett) who ends up going along with the bank robbers.  Both bank robbers fall in love with Kate which of course leads to trouble.  For the most part, the chemistry between Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton is undeniably funny.  The trouble comes near the last third of the film where we find that we've had quite enough of their incessant bantering which was funny early on, but by now is just annoying.  Add to this the love triangle and the story gets sappy in a hurry.  The 2 hour running time is just too long for us to not start thinking how annoying the movie is becoming.  Perhaps many scenes should have been left on the cutting room floor.
